Is Deep Dish Pizza Really Pizza?

Through all the clear definitions, the Chicago-style fried pizza is a pizza. It contains a shell, sauce and (lots) cheese, so it definitely meets traditional requirements, and more, it sells as pizza. If the restaurant contacts some "pizza" and the customer agrees, it is pizza.

However, whether the deep dish of Chicago flavor is a good representation of what pizza should be is a difficult problem to solve, which caused a heated debate. As Meridith Hill of Thrillist observed, the experience of eating a deep dish is more like eating a pizza soup in a bread bowl instead of a real pizza.

We will mention Heil in New York here, where thin shells are mandatory. However, countless others agree with her point of view: the profound cuisine of the Chicago way is its own thing. Even the Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia discussed the debate, and the Chicago Sun Times was told that the dish was "delicious, but not pizza."

The debate reached its boiling point in 2013, when comedian John Stewart was shocked by the "Daily Show" on Chicago's most famous creation.

"Let me explain," Stewart said. "Deep pizza is no better than New York pizza." "This is not a pizza, it is a ceramic dish!"

Chicago Mayor Ram Emanuel tried to change Stuart's point of view by sending a deep pizza to the Daily Show. Stewart's response was to provide the dog with a pie... he didn't touch it.

Although it may be quite frank, Stewart explains the effect of cooking arguments on deep dishes: from preparation to consumption, pizza is traditionally a simple food. It's cheap and easy to make, so guests can enjoy it anytime, anywhere.

Deep dish pizza does not contain any of these qualities. A pancake takes about 45-60 minutes to bake, because all the cheese, sauces and layers are not in the foreground, but we will discuss the time needed for cooking. They usually eat food with forks and knives, usually requiring full pancakes instead of slices.

But the biggest difference between Chicago-style pizza and thin-bone broth is also the most obvious: deep dish pizza with top sauce. The cheese does not make a beautiful skin, while the deep layer is buried in the cake. The process of making a pizza is similar to making a deep dish of lasagna or ceramic dish; there are many layers that produce a completely different texture. Some people like it, but this is a completely different dining experience, not a quick slice from the pizzeria.

Despite this, Chicago people seem to agree that thin-skin pizza is more suitable for daily dining. According to 2013 data from the Grubhub food distribution website, Chicago pizza lovers only have 9% of time to ask them to leave.

Does this mean that the deep dish on the way to Chicago is actually not a pizza? Not necessarily. Many foods contain extreme varieties and this debate is not always raised. Both Raisin Bran and Lucky Charms are breakfast cereals, but they offer a completely different experience. Angelfood cakes are completely different from carrot cakes, but both are two types of cakes.

If you like Chicago pizza, don't let anyone tell you that it's not true. If you like thin skin and a layer of cheese, this is also good. Either way, you eat pizza.
